Versa Mix MP3 Mixing Software Kit
Unfortunately, for the first full review of a software package listed in the Mobile Beat 2009 Gear Guide, there isn’t a lot of information available on it. Even going directly to the American Audio website, there is precious little information there as well. So the first review is going to be more like an overview since I cannot find more information about it, much less know of any friends in the business that are using it.
However, here is what I have found out about this package…
Versa Mix MP3 Mixing Software Kit is produced by American Audio. As the name implies, it is a kit that includes a basic mixing software program as well as a USB device for monitor outputs and HP-500 headphones. The American Audio website claims that the software is compatible with most built-in sound cards – which makes me wonder which ones are supported and if any of the external/expansion sound cards are supported. For instance, say you are using one of the higher-end Sound Blaster cards; is there going to be compatibility issues?
Anyway, there are no specifications or minimum requirements that I could find for the software other than you need to have Windows XP installed. I would assume that this means that the mixing program is also compatible with Windows Vista too, but it looks like the Mac OS X crowd won’t be using this except for on dual-boot machines.
How much disc space does the software require? How much RAM is required? Can it handle anything other than MP3s?
I do not know and from what I can tell from the pictures of the box that the kit comes in, American Audio does not feel that we should either. At the very least, this may be a bit of an oversight by the American Audio team. At worst it may be somewhat suspect, yet the general look and feel of product is that it is made for the entry-level DJ market.
One of the few things that I do know about this product is that it sells for around $100 USD. That’s about it. I give it 2 stars out of 5 because of the serious lack of any useful information, it appears to be an entry-level product and because I simply do not know of anyone that uses it – which means that I cannot say that it is a good entry-level package, nor can I say it is worth the C-note to find out.
