On 30 March 2009, DJMM was launched with little fanfare and just a handful of new members. Since then, membership has more than tripled as more people learn about and experience DJMM. Now that we are celebrating our first anniversary, we are looking to the future in order that all DJMM members benefit greatly. However, what really makes DJMM such an amazing experience IS all of the members!

Even though the members are the true stars, over the past year a select few have really stood out with their continued participation as well as their dedication to DJMM. Realizing that, I thought it only fitting that they should be recognized and commended for the amount of effort they have put forth. It is with great personal pleasure I announce that Dan Sauer, Mitch Taylor and Wayne Frady will each receive an award certificate for participating in more than fifty hours of conference calls, training and private discussions associated with DJMM.

Over the past year, I have had the honor of getting to know Dan, Mitch and Wayne much better. But it was during the course of the past year that I also developed a sincere respect and admiration for them as professional entertainers. They rarely miss their group calls, they are always willing to listen as well as freely offering their expertise, expereince and thoughts. They form the very core of a dynamic and highly creative process that is greater than the sum of the parts.

All three gentlemen will be receiving certificates in recognition of their devotion to developing themselves as well as doing something positively constructive for the Mobile Disc Jockey Industry. Congratulations!!!

AKA Laptops Still Suck!

Well I took a little breather from writing articles in general, especially the Laptops Suck series of articles. But here we are, three months into the new year and it seems like as good as time as any to get back into some more of the nitty-gritty why laptops suck for mobile entertainment purposes. The following is a response that I received from a reader in regards to Laptops Suck – Part 5:

“Greetings:
I have your book, “Introduction to Computer DJing & CPS,” and am aware of your concerns about limitations of laptop use. Since it has been couple of years since the publication of your book, and better laptops enter the market, I am wondering what your opinion is of HP Envy 15 Beats, that is supposed to be geared towards DJ use. Thank you.
Shariar”

Thank you for your response and for reading my book, Shariar!

In a nutshell, while a lot has definitely changed since the writing and publication of my book in February 2008, a great many things have stayed the same. As with all things, laptops have made progressively huge leaps forward in power and performance in most areas. Better/faster processors, more RAM, solid-state hard drives (in some cases), better integrated sound and video cards round out the list of a whole host of performance-boosting improvements. Completing the list are the new carbon-fiber or machined aluminum uni-bodies, very similar to the Mac Book Pro, make this latest generation of laptops one of the lightest too.

However, speaking in general, even this latest generation lacks a few fundamental capabilities. First and foremost are the four key ingredients that make up the difference between a CPS and everything else. Those pivotal items are video, audio, multiple hard drives in RAID configuration and thermal issues. Specifically, audio and video while definitely better than what they were 2, 5 or even 10 years ago, they still use up your installed RAM in order to run. With hard drives, most laptops are still being produced with mechanical HDDs and only one at that, making it necessary to still carry external drives as well as only having limited (if any) capabilities with creating a basic RAID configuration. Finally heat is still a big concern for extended use, especially outdoors – thus the reason that laptop coolers remain a popular item too.

Specifically looking at the HP Envy 15 Beats, not much has changed here either. While a stock unit comes with 6GB RAM installed, a large portion of that is dedicated to the embedded video card (1GB) – that’s almost 20% of the entire system RAM just to start the laptop. But if you change the video setting to the max (3.75GB), that number becomes roughly 60% just to run video! I guess that’s the direction things are heading in when it takes nearly 1GB just to run the bloated GUI of Windows since Vista was unleashed.

Anyway, aside from all the video issues, you will notice that even the Envy 15 Beats Limited Edition comes with an external USB sound card too… USB uses up system resources, increasing the amount of overhead for the processor as well as reducing even further the amount of free RAM that you have to play with. On the other hand, looking at a sound card such as the Maya 44 Mk II PCI – it uses a fraction of the system resources to run, features 1/4″ balanced inputs and outputs as well as plugging right into the expansion bus as opposed to having yet another USB dongle dangling about.

Looking at the HDD, it is still using a mechanical HDD as opposed to a solid-state one. Also, while it is a 500GB HDD, it is still the only HDD within the system. In other words, any library and backup drives will need to be external, they will need to be USB unless a PCMCIA to Firewire adapter card is added to the system and you certainly cannot create a RAID configuration with it. Additionally, since all these devices are typically being connected using USB, a powered USB hub will need to be added to the system as well since there are only 3 USB ports on this particular laptop. In other words, due to the limitations of laptops (still), most people getting in on the ground floor of DJing with a computer buying this system will also need to add another $400 – $800 with of external devices! It simply does not make sense to me to spend upwards of $4,000 – $6,000 on a limited laptop when those dollars go about three times further with a CPS.

That’s not even mentioning the fact that even the HP Envy 15 Beats Limited Edition (which Dre endorses for other DJs and performers) comes with a whole host of non-essential programs installed (i.e. Norton, HP crap, media player crap, Rhapsody crap, etc.) that gobble up even more of that precious system memory. If you DO buy this, like any other store-bought system, I would highly recommend wiping the drive, give it two partitions (one for the OS and other programs and one for the Virtual Memory) and do a clean install of JUST the OS (I would recommend XP Pro) and whatever program(s) you may be using to mix media.

I know this is probably a bit more than what you were bargaining for, but I could go on for pages about the many potential pitfalls and shortcomings of using a laptop. That being said, aside from my 1,000 word dissertation to answer your question I will say this; at least you are not looking at using a netbook to DJ with!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DJMM Presents:
Lia Allen
Lia Allen & Associates

There will be a special training call featuring Lia Allen on Tuesday, 6 April 2010 at 8PM EST! This is a “do-over” from the February Training call featuring Lia where we experienced some technical difficulties due to poor internet access and server issues. However this time we have the bugs ironed out, the sand is out of our shoes (as well as the computers) and Lia is ready to hit a home run again!!!

But wait, that’s not all! There will also be a very special announcement at the end of the training session that will save attendees more than a $1,000!!!

Here’s more information about Lia and this awesome learning opportunity:

A special DJMM Training Conference Call will feature Lia Allen of Lia Allen & Associates – founder of the Business Marketing Gym, Marketing Coach & Concultant and Get Clients Now!™ Licensed Facilitator. Lia will be presenting her hugely popular “Five Secrets to Finding All the Clients You’ll Ever Need” seminar on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 8PM EST/5PM PST.

Five Secrets to Finding All The Clients You’ll Ever Need
The answer may be simpler than you think. In this program, you will discover three things you may be doing now that can actually prevent you from getting clients, how the Persistence Effect can liberate your marketing, and one simple habit you can begin today that may bring you all the clients you will ever need.

“I’ve been working with self-employed professionals like you since 1993, helping my clients to make more money with less effort, and teaching them how to earn a better living doing what they love.” – Lia Allen

Lia Allen is owner of Lia Allen & Associates, a company that specializes in providing marketing facilitation and business development services. Lia Allen is also a Licensed Facilitator for Get Clients Now!™, a program developed by C.J. Hayden, the author of the book by the same name. Lia has a strong background in marketing and sales.

When asked about her business, Lia had this to say. “We work with business owners who are frustrated with the feast or famine cycle of their businesses. Together, we develop strategies that identify simple daily steps which can be implemented in as little as 15 minutes a day that will result in getting and retaining more clients.”
